Emergency lights are battery-powered lighting devices that will automatically turn on when the building loses power. Emergency lights are a standard configuration in new commercial and high-occupancy residential buildings, such as university dormitories, apartments and hotels. Most building codes require that they must also be installed in older buildings.

Almost every commercial and high-occupancy residential building has installed modern emergency lighting. The lamp consists of one or more incandescent bulbs or one or more high-intensity light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The emergency light is usually a PAR 36 sealed beam or a wedge-shaped base light. All units have some kind of equipment to focus and enhance the light they produce. It can be a plastic cover on the fixing device or a reflector placed behind the light source. Most individual light sources can be rotated and aimed at the places where lighting is most needed in an emergency, such as towards the direction of a fire exit. Modern luminaires usually have some kind of test button, even if the main power is still on, the button will temporarily cover the device and make it turn on the light and use battery power. Modern systems operate at relatively low voltages (usually 6-12 volts). This not only reduces the size of the battery required, but also reduces the load on the circuit to which the emergency light is connected. Modern lamps include a small transformer in the base of the lamp, which reduces the voltage of the main current to the low voltage required by the lamp. Batteries are usually made of lead-calcium and can be used for 10 years or more with continuous charging. During a power outage along the exit path, US fire safety regulations require the battery to have at least 90 minutes of battery life.
